Back to Obsidian Sync: my first thoughts
Yesterday I subscribed to Obsidian Sync Standard to test the plan I mentioned a few days ago. Trying the new ideas by actually doing things usually reveals different perspectives, and that was certainly the case here. While setting up selective sync, I started weighing the potential for conflicts with Syncthing, and I’m fairly confident in the current flow.
The Mac Mini in my office is on 24/7, essentially acting as a second backup. So, even though Syncthing is set to bidirectional, in practice, the files always flow from my MacBook Air to the Mini.
Here is how I see the scenarios playing out:
- Change on MacBook Air: Obsidian Sync updates the phone, while Syncthing updates the Mini.
- Change on Phone: Obsidian Sync updates the Air, which then triggers Syncthing to update the Mini.
It’s been less than two full days, but since I’m constantly taking notes in Obsidian, many files have already synced across all three devices without issue.

While the Obsidian side is resolved, my automatic Google Photos backup and the Android-Mac file transfer I built via Syncthing are now gone, and I’ll need to find a new workaround for those. As for the Supernote, I can simply turn on Obsidian Sync there as well.
