It’s been a few months since I merged the sliding prototype with the kitchen box that traveled with me across Europe last summer, and I’m absolutely in love with it. This version 3 has come with us on several short trips through Portugal and Spain, and on countless trails — like this one.

A quick note: Although most of the pictures I’ve shared so far of the car kitchen are about making coffee, that’s just a tiny portion of what it’s actually used for. I often cook meals after a hike or at resting areas while traveling. In the picture above, for example, I was making coffee after we had lunch.

That photo is also a good example of how the space below the platform serves as a regular trunk. If you look closely, you’ll see our bags there during a recent trip to Lisbon. And yes, the wind shield I hacked many months ago is still in use. I guess if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

Below, you can see the sketch of the base that stays in the trunk. I had to make some changes, so it’s not exactly the final design, but it’s pretty close. Either way, the part you see in the photo above can be easily removed when we are not using it.

Like I said, version 3 is working like a charm. I love it, but since it was a proof of concept, it was built with 10 mm plywood. Now it’s time to make it stronger and give it a proper finish.

Today, I bought the wood and started disassembling the external shell, which is the part that will be rebuilt. Once I’m done with that, I’ll publish a video showing how everything works — including the drawers 😉.
