Where is my blog traffic coming from? My 6-month experiment to test the reach of social media.
I already knew that thanks to Medium’s canonical feature, my blog receives significant traffic from there. Bluesky and Mastodon are also quite link-friendly. But what about the others? How effective—or detrimental—are they really for a blog?
To find out, I started an experiment in December 2025 that I hope to continue until June or July 2026 to gather a reliable sample. Almost every post on my blog—whether long or short—is being shared on as many social media platforms as I can reasonably manage.
Thankfully, I’ve been able to automate cross-posting to Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, Tumblr, and LinkedIn using Micro.blog. However, there is still some manual “copy-and-paste” work involved. For instance, links to long-form articles are manually added to my YouTube Community tab and Substack. Occasionally, I even post something to Instagram.
After a few weeks, I’m already seeing unexpected traffic. It’s just a few clicks, but there are people coming from Threads, LinkedIn, and even a couple of visits from Instagram. The one I’m most intrigued by is LinkedIn. The cross-posting there is super basic: no image and no preview, just the title of the post and a link. Even then, some people are clicking. To track all of this, I’m using GoatCounter.
As a final note, the only places I am truly active are Bluesky, Mastodon, and YouTube. I don’t keep any other social media apps on my phone. For everything else, I use a browser on my computer to do what needs to be done, and then I leave. If you’re curious, you can find all my social accounts listed here.
