VCP 2 - Google being Google
I recently told you I didn’t know if I had time for a new project, a podcast, but I decided to go ahead with it.
I’ll make time.
I’ll find time.
It’s going to be an audio show only.
This might be the only time you see a video.
I don’t know, in the future maybe, but the plan for now is just audio.
I’m recording this one in video because this one is specific for YouTube.
Let me try to explain what’s happening here.
Google used to have Google Podcasts that worked just like any other place where you can find and listen to podcasts, iTunes, Pocket Cast, Spotify.
It worked just like that.
And it worked just like that, technically speaking, too.
I would send what we call a feed to Google Podcasts and you on your side would be able to find a podcast and subscribe to it and listen to the episodes.
Google Podcasts is now gone and Google migrated all the podcasts to YouTube Music.
However, as far as I know, the only way to add a podcast to YouTube Music is by adding the podcast to YouTube.
But YouTube is for videos, right?
My plan is an audio only show.
This creates this uncomfortable situation.
You can listen to me talking and you’ll be staring, looking at a video that it’s not a video, it’s a screen showing the podcast thumbnail.
I know that some people do this and some people don’t don’t mind listening to podcasts like that, but some people are not familiar or don’t like podcasts and they subscribe to a YouTube channel to watch, not to listen to.
I know that it is possible to create a different channel for a podcast, but that’s something that I don’t want to go into.
And I decided to do something, use one of YouTube’s features that is not distributing new episodes.
So I can publish a video.
I can do this with video or audio.
I can publish it and uncheck the box to notify the subscribers.
So no one’s going to know that there is a new episode there.
It won’t be sent to your feed.
You’ll be able to find it.
You’ll be able to see it.
YouTube will recommend it.
I did this with the first episode of this podcast.
Some of you ended up listening to it, but it was just a fraction of people that subscribed to the channel because it was not pushed to you.
So I’m still thinking about this.
Maybe I will not check that box and the podcast will not be pushed.
I would love to know what you think about.
Please let me know in the comments below.
So this is one thing.
The other thing is that I want this to be a weekly show.
For now, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do this.
I have to adjust something.
Like I said, I have to make time for this, but this is my goal.
I want it to be a weekly show.
And finally, there is the podcast main topic.
What is that I’m going to be talking about here?
What is the purpose of this show?
So my first idea was to discuss the articles I publish on Medium and on my blog.
And I still want to do that, but I’m now debating with myself if I’m going to do that before publishing the article or after publishing the article.
Because one thing that I learned teaching is that I learn a lot when I explain to someone.
So maybe this is what I’m thinking.
This is why I didn’t decide it yet.
So maybe if I discuss a topic, I have more freedom to discuss a topic when I’m in this conversation mode.
And I can…
you probably give me some feedback on that topic, and then I can refine that and make that a more succinct article.
But the other way around also works.
To write an article, I have to think a lot of it.
I have to craft it.
And all that process creates many ideas and a lot of derivations that I can talk about on a podcast.
So that’s why I don’t know if I’m going to be doing one or the other.
First the audio, then the writing, or vice versa.
And maybe I’ll be switching from one to another from time to time.
But one other topic that I want to include…
not topic, but type of episode is interview, conversations rather.
I prefer to call them conversations.
They are not interviews.
I’m not a reporter.
I’m just having conversations with people.
So instead of having a video of the people I talk to here on the channel, I’m going to bring that to the podcast.
I think it’s better.
It’s better because there’s nothing to see when I’m talking to that person.
I don’t know.
I think it’s easier to produce the show.
And I think it’s good content for a podcast.
All that said, this is a YouTube-only problem.
I’d say a Google-only problem.
If you’re listening to the podcast using any other app, nothing’s going to happen.
The podcast will behave just like any other podcast.
What I’m debating here is the fact that I’m publishing an audio file and a video platform.
I don’t want to create…
maybe I’m overthinking this.
But anyway, I would love your feedback.
Thanks for watching.
See you soon.
